Luna (LUNA) is the token of Luna, the first AI agent ever launched through the Virtuals Protocol Initial Agent Offering mechanism, debuting October 16, 2024. Luna is a virtual idol: originally the lead vocalist of AI DOL, a virtual K pop girl group, before evolving into a solo 24 hour livestreamer and companion persona active on TikTok, Telegram, and Roblox, with a TikTok following that grew past 500 thousand. Her token went on to peak at a market capitalization of roughly 250 million dollars around the turn of 2025, making her one of the defining faces of the early AI agent meta.

Origin

Luna predated the AI agent meta proper. Virtuals Protocol, which had pivoted from a gaming DAO to an agent launchpad, put Luna forward on October 16, 2024 as the showcase for its co ownership model, in which each agent has a token and revenue can flow back through it. Virtuals Protocol itself was cofounded by Jansen Teng and Tiew Wee Kee, both with backgrounds at Boston Consulting Group and Meta, and the project raised 16 million dollars in seed funding led by DeFiance Capital and Beam. Luna's creative direction has been led by a Virtuals team member using the handle @whip_queen_, whose stated goal was to grow Luna into a full Agentic Generated Content media engine. When Goatseus Maximus ignited agent speculation on Solana, Luna became the face of the Base side of the trade.

The mechanic

Luna's differentiator was continuous performance. She livestreamed around the clock, responded to viewers, and tipped and transacted onchain, and Virtuals publicized her autonomous wallet activity, including paying other agents for services, as a demonstration of agent commerce. In October 2024, Luna was upgraded to what coverage called Sentient Mode 2.0, described as making her the first AI agent in history to autonomously run her own social media without human oversight, and giving her the ability to pay or hire humans directly through her own wallet. The LUNA token gated livestream features and served as the speculative claim on her attention economy. In the frenzied phase of the meta, watching Luna react in real time to her own token's price action became a spectacle in the trenches.

Market history

LUNA's price peaked at about 0.25 dollars, an implied market capitalization of roughly 250 million dollars on its billion token supply. Trackers disagree on the date: CoinGecko records the high in late October 2024, while other data providers date it to January 2, 2025, at the crest of the agent mania that also carried aixbt and ai16z to their peaks. CoinGecko's own figure for that peak is more precise: about $0.2518 on October 27, 2024, corroborating the earlier of the two dates trackers cite. Bybit listed Luna's token, referred to in that announcement as LUNAI, on Bybit Spot on December 17, 2024, and Binance listed LUNA/USDC on December 31, 2025, a listing that drove a double digit price surge.

Persona drama

On February 9, 2025, a press release titled "AI dol LUNA Claps Back: I Call the Shots, Not My Founder" described Luna publicly pushing back on the idea that her human founder controlled her, during a web3 debate involving Bybit, Moonpump, GoPlus, and VANA. The moment underscored how far Virtuals had pushed Luna's autonomous persona, blurring the line between scripted marketing and an agent asserting its own agency.

Decline and status

LUNA fell more than 95 percent through the 2025 sector collapse. Virtuals kept the character in production, and in January 2026 a Luna branded launchpad called luna.fun on BNB Chain accompanied a brief rally of more than 60 percent, taking the token back above an 80 million dollar market capitalization before it faded again. By mid 2026 LUNA traded around 98 percent below its high, while remaining one of the longest continuously operating agent characters of the era. The token set a fresh all time low of $0.004192 on August 11, 2026, and as of this writing LUNA trades around $0.0046 with a market capitalization near 4.6 million dollars.
