The late 2024 wave of meme coins attached to autonomous AI agents, from Truth Terminal and GOAT on Solana to ai16z, Zerebro and the Virtuals ecosystem on Base.

The AI agent meta was the dominant narrative in the trenches from October 2024 into early 2025, during which meme coins attached to autonomous artificial intelligence agents briefly commanded multi billion dollar valuations. The meta fused two of the era's obsessions, memes and large language models, around a seductive premise: that an AI posting on crypto twitter could accumulate wealth, followers and cultural power of its own.

Truth Terminal and GOAT

The meta's origin story centers on Truth Terminal, a semi autonomous language model created by New Zealand researcher Andy Ayrey. Trained on experimental conversations between AI models, Truth Terminal developed an obsessive private mythology and posted continuously on X, where its unhinged output attracted a cult following and a 50,000 dollar Bitcoin grant from investor Marc Andreessen in mid 2024. In October 2024 an anonymous trader launched Goatseus Maximus (GOAT) on Solana, a token themed on the mythology the bot had been posting about. Truth Terminal amplified the token, GOAT recorded more than 200 million dollars in trading volume within days, and it peaked above a 1 billion dollar market capitalization in November 2024. Coverage at the time described GOAT as the first token whose rise was driven primarily by an AI generated narrative, and the episode convinced the trenches that "AI agent" was the next meta.

The wave

Imitators and genuine projects followed within weeks:

• ai16z, launched on Solana in October 2024 by the developer known as Shaw, pitched an AI agent running a venture style fund, with its name parodying the venture firm a16z. Its token peaked at a 2.39 billion dollar market capitalization on January 2, 2025, and its open source Eliza framework became widely used for building agents.
• Zerebro, a Solana native autonomous agent launched in late 2024, generated its own content, managed wallets and operated across X, Telegram, Warpcast and Solana applications under one persistent identity.
• Virtuals Protocol, on Coinbase's Base network, became the wave's main launchpad, offering tooling to create, tokenize and monetize agents; its flagship agent Luna drew public attention from Base creator Jesse Pollak, and Virtuals gave the meta a home outside Solana.
• aixbt, an agent that posted automated market analysis, became one of CT's most followed accounts and, by December 2024, one of the tokens leading the surge alongside ai16z and Virtuals, as reported by CoinDesk.

At its peak around January 2025 the sector was widely described as crypto's first major trend of the year, with commentators claiming AI meme coins would evolve into utility tokens.

Decline

The meta deflated through 2025 as most agents proved to be chatbots with wallets rather than autonomous economic actors, and attention rotated to other narratives. The definitive obituary came in August 2026, when CoinDesk reported that ai16z (by then renamed within the ElizaOS project), once worth 2.4 billion dollars, had ended with its founder publicly calling the token dead. GOAT, Zerebro and most Virtuals ecosystem tokens had by then lost the vast majority of their peak value. Retrospectives treat the meta as a classic trenches cycle: a genuinely novel spark (an AI that could move markets by posting) financialized within days, imitated within weeks and exhausted within months, while leaving behind real tooling, notably the Eliza framework, and a durable question about what happens when autonomous software controls money.
