Virtuals Protocol is the AI agent launchpad on Base that defined the tokenized agent model and served as the cross chain rival to Solana's AI agent scene.

Function

Virtuals Protocol is a launchpad for tokenized AI agents on Base, the Coinbase built Ethereum layer 2. Each agent launched through the platform gets its own token, sold through a bonding curve and paired against the protocol's VIRTUAL token, so that agent speculation routes value back to the platform asset. Agents are built on the protocol's GAME framework and can post, trade and interact autonomously, with revenue mechanisms intended to buy back agent tokens. Founded by Jansen Teng and Wee Kee Tiew, the project evolved out of the gaming DAO PathDAO in early 2024 and shipped its tokenization mechanism on Base later that year.

The AI agent wave

Virtuals defined the tokenized agent model during the late 2024 ai agent meta. Its flagship launches, including the market commentary agent AIXBT and the streaming agent Luna, crossed large valuations within weeks, and AIXBT in particular became a fixture of crypto twitter discourse. VIRTUAL itself rose from around 0.03 dollars in late 2024 to an all time high of 5.07 dollars on January 2, 2025, a gain above 16,000 percent. For Solana traders, Virtuals was the other side of the cross chain rivalry: Base had Virtuals, Solana had daos.fun and ai16z, with goatseus maximus as the meta's origin myth, and capital rotated between the two scenes daily. Virtuals later deployed on Solana itself in 2025 to compete on both chains.

Evolution

After the agent bubble deflated in 2025, Virtuals kept shipping: the points based Genesis launch system, later replaced by the conviction based Unicorn model in late 2025, plus modules including the Agent Commerce Protocol and a revenue network. Coverage in 2026 describes thousands of agent launches, several agents above 100 million dollar valuations at their peaks, and VIRTUAL trading roughly 80 percent below its January 2025 high.

Status in 2026

Virtuals Protocol remains the reference AI agent launchpad in 2026 and the standing benchmark against which Solana AI launches are measured, even with sector valuations far off their peak.
