Turbo is a meme coin on Ethereum widely described as the first meme coin created by artificial intelligence. Australian digital artist Rhett Mankind launched it in April 2023 by asking OpenAI's GPT 4 to design a token on a budget of 69 dollars, documenting every step in public and letting his followers vote on decisions.

Origin

Mankind, a designer with no coding background, challenged GPT 4 to create a meme coin that could reach a 69 million dollar market capitalization. The model chose the concept of Turbo Toad, wrote the token parameters, and walked him through deployment, while his audience voted on the name and imagery. The result was TURBO, launched in April 2023 with a supply of 69 billion tokens and a frog mascot later associated with the character Quantum Leap. Mankind subsequently handed control to the community, and the experiment drew attention from figures including the artist Beeple.

Market history

TURBO reached a market capitalization of about 50 to 77 million dollars within weeks of launch, briefly making its creation story one of the most covered crypto stories of mid 2023. The token found a second life in 2024 when AI themed meme coins became a dominant narrative: its market capitalization crossed 600 million dollars in May 2024, and during the late 2024 AI coin mania led by tokens like Goatseus Maximus it set an all time high of about 0.0144 dollars on December 11, 2024, putting its market capitalization at roughly 1 billion dollars. By August 2026 it traded at a market capitalization of about 50 million dollars.

Cultural impact

TURBO is the founding artifact of the AI meme coin genre. Eighteen months before autonomous agents and AI branded tokens flooded pump.fun and the trenches, it demonstrated that a language model could conceive, name, and effectively launch a token that markets would price in the hundreds of millions. Its origin story is routinely cited in histories of both meme coin culture and AI crypto, and its 69 dollar budget became a permanent piece of trench lore about how little capital a viral idea requires.
