GREED was a Solana memecoin launched by Dave Portnoy in February 2025 as a self described experiment in greed, which reached about 41 million dollars before Portnoy sold his entire 35 percent holding and the token fell 99 percent.

GREED was a memecoin on the Solana blockchain created by Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy on February 18, 2025 through pump.fun. Launched at the chaotic end of the celebrity coin wave, days after Portnoy's involvement in the LIBRA affair became public, the token lasted less than a day at scale and became the era's cleanest documented example of a celebrity pump and dump arc.

Origin

Portnoy had spent early February 2025 as the loudest celebrity participant in the trenches, promoting jailstool and other coins to his millions of followers. He announced GREED as something between a joke and a social experiment about the emotion itself, telling followers the token would test how greedy people could be. A wallet linked to Portnoy held 357.9 million tokens, about 35 percent of supply, a concentration he disclosed openly.

Market history

GREED ran to a market capitalization of about 41.5 million dollars within hours of launch. Portnoy then sold his entire position in a single transaction, roughly 270 thousand dollars of tokens, netting an estimated 258 thousand dollars in profit according to Lookonchain and SolScan data cited by The Block. The price collapsed about 99 percent almost immediately.

GREED2 and aftermath

Within about an hour Portnoy launched a sequel token, GREED2, telling followers not to invest more than they could afford to lose and promising not to sell before a stated time. He said he converted his GREED proceeds into jailstool. The episode drew widespread accusations of a rug pull; Portnoy rejected the framing, arguing he had never promised to hold and that the token's name was the disclosure. No regulatory action over GREED had been reported as of 2026.

Status

Both GREED and GREED2 became effectively worthless within weeks and saw no revival. The token is treated in coverage of February 2025 as the reductio of the celebrity meta: a coin about greed, bought in full knowledge of the mechanic it named, functioning exactly as labeled. Together with LIBRA and Central African Republic Coin it marked the wave's end, after which celebrity launches largely disappeared from the trenches.
