Chiikawa is an unlicensed Solana meme coin named after the Japanese Chiikawa franchise, which surged in late July 2026 as the character's first film broke Japanese box office records.
Chiikawa (CHIIKAWA), usually displayed under its Japanese name ちいかわ, is a meme coin on Solana named after the Chiikawa character franchise. It is a community created token with no connection to the rights holder, and it rose in late July and early August 2026 by riding one of the biggest mainstream IP moments of the year.
The IP
Chiikawa, by the illustrator known as Nagano, began as a manga in 2020 and grew into one of Japan's dominant character franchises, known for pairing extremely cute characters with a harsh, precarious underlying world. It has won the Grand Prix of the Japan Character Awards three times and became a merchandising phenomenon. Its first feature film, Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of the Mermaid Island, opened in Japan in July 2026 with simultaneous IMAX screenings, sold over 1.5 million tickets in its opening week, and crossed 8 billion yen in revenue by mid August 2026, topping the Japanese box office. Crypto Twitter posts about the coin leaned on exactly this: the claim that Japanese audiences would rather watch Chiikawa in IMAX than Hollywood's summer tentpoles became the shorthand virality thesis.
Token history
Multiple unrelated tokens use the Chiikawa name across Solana, robinhood chain, and BSC, so the ticker denotes a cluster rather than a single asset. The dominant version trades on Solana, primarily through PumpSwap and Meteora pools. On July 31, 2026, exchange research desk Bitrue documented a breakout of roughly 128 percent in 24 hours, with about 1.9 million dollars in daily volume, over 20,000 transactions, and roughly 3,000 holders. In early August the pump.fun tracking account @PumpfunEco highlighted a trader who had turned 1,300 dollars into a 15x gain on the coin. As of mid August 2026 the main token's market capitalization was around 1.7 million dollars, making it one of the larger coins of the wave, though far below the majors.
Licensing
There is no public evidence that any Chiikawa token is licensed or endorsed by Nagano or the franchise's rights holders, and the official Chiikawa site does not acknowledge one. Bitrue's analysis flagged the licensing question, the anonymous team, and thin liquidity as core risks. Like most IP coins in the trenches, its relationship to its namesake is parasitic on attention, and that attention is tied to a film release cycle with a natural end.
