Brett, also called Based Brett, is a meme coin on Base, the Ethereum layer 2 network launched by Coinbase. It is based on Brett, a laid back blue character from Matt Furie's comic Boy's Club, the same comic that produced Pepe the Frog. Launched in February 2024, it became the largest meme coin on Base and the chain's unofficial mascot.
Origin
BRETT launched in February 2024, shortly after Base opened to the public, with a supply of about 10 billion tokens. The premise was simple lore arithmetic: if Pepe ruled Ethereum, then Pepe's best friend Brett should rule Base. Like Pepe, the token has no affiliation with Matt Furie and exists as a community tribute to his character. The project leaned into "based" culture, the Base ecosystem's house meme, and quickly absorbed most of the chain's early meme coin liquidity.

BRETT surged through the spring of 2024 and in June 2024 became the first meme coin on Base to pass a 1 billion dollar market capitalization, reaching about 1.9 billion dollars at a new all time high on June 12, 2024 after gaining more than 400 percent in a month. Following a summer retrace, it set its final all time high of about 0.2342 dollars on December 1, 2024, which put its market capitalization at roughly 2.3 billion dollars. The token declined steeply afterward as meme coin attention concentrated on Solana launchpads. By August 2026 CoinGecko showed a market capitalization near 36 million dollars, about 98 percent below the peak.
