A shill is a person who promotes an asset while concealing a financial interest in the outcome, and to shill is to perform that promotion. In crypto the term covers paid influencers, project team members posing as fans, and ordinary holders hyping their own [[bag]] in hopes of selling higher. Unlike neutral advocacy, shilling implies an undisclosed motive: the shiller benefits when the audience buys.

## Usage

"Shill" saturates trenches discourse. Communities organize "shill threads" and "raid" posts where holders mass reply to popular accounts with a token's contract address. A [[kol]] who posts calls for payment is dismissed as a paid shill, and "shill me a coin" is a standing crypto Twitter prompt inviting others to pitch their holdings. The verb is not always hostile; traders freely admit "shilling my bags," and self aware shilling is part of meme coin culture. The line is crossed when promotion hides compensation or insider allocation, at which point shilling becomes the marketing arm of a [[pump and dump]], with the audience positioned as [[exit liquidity]]. United States regulators have charged celebrities for promoting tokens without disclosing payment.

## History

The word comes from carnival and gambling slang: a shill was a confederate planted in the crowd who pretended to win, luring genuine customers into a rigged game. Dictionaries trace this usage to the early twentieth century, around 1914. The term migrated through gambling and advertising into internet forums, and Bitcointalk and early altcoin communities of the 2010s applied it to paid pumpers of new coins. It has remained one of crypto's most durable words, with glossaries from Crypto.com to Gate codifying the modern sense.
