PENGU is the Solana token of the Pudgy Penguins NFT brand, launched via a large airdrop in December 2024 and later the subject of a US ETF filing.

PENGU is the official token of Pudgy Penguins, the Ethereum NFT brand turned mainstream toy and media company, and it launched on the Solana blockchain on December 17, 2024. Though attached to an established brand rather than a raw meme, PENGU launched into and traded like a Solana meme coin, and it became one of the chain's largest tokens of the 2025 cycle.

Origin

Pudgy Penguins, led by CEO Luca Netz, chose Solana over its native Ethereum for the token launch, citing distribution and trading culture. The supply of 88,888,888,888 PENGU allocated roughly a quarter to Pudgy Penguins NFT holders and about 24 percent more to other communities invited into "the Huddle," one of the broadest airdrops ever attempted; claims stayed open for 88 days before unclaimed tokens were burned. The launch was read as the NFT ecosystem's bid to convert blue chip status into token liquidity.

Market history

PENGU spiked on launch day, December 17, 2024, with trackers recording an all time high price near 0.057 dollars, then sold off through early 2025 as airdrop recipients exited. Its second act came in mid 2025: Canary Capital filed with the SEC on March 20, 2025, for an ETF holding both PENGU tokens and Pudgy Penguins NFTs, the first filing of its kind, and the SEC's acknowledgment of the filing on July 10, 2025, helped drive a surge of more than 70 percent in a month. PENGU's market capitalization peaked around 2.74 to 2.8 billion dollars in that July 2025 run, overtaking dogwifhat among Solana ecosystem tokens. It cooled in late 2025 alongside the broader market.

Cultural impact

PENGU marked the merger of NFT era brand building with meme coin distribution: a Wall Street adjacent company using an 88 billion token airdrop to seed a trading community. In the trenches its launch weekend was treated as a liquidity event on par with an exchange listing season, and the ETF filing became the era's benchmark for how far meme adjacent assets could push into regulated finance. It also settled the "which chain" question for consumer crypto brands in Solana's favor during that cycle.
