Javier Milei is a libertarian economist who became president of Argentina in December 2023 on a chainsaw waving anti establishment platform. His place in [[meme coin]] history rests on a single post: on February 14, 2025, he shared the contract address of the LIBRA token on X, and the fallout, covered at [[LIBRA scandal]], became the first meme coin crisis to threaten a sitting head of state.

## The LIBRA post

Milei's post presented LIBRA as a private initiative to fund small Argentine businesses. The token, created by Kelsier Ventures chief executive [[hayden davis]] with the firm KIP Protocol, spiked to a multibillion dollar valuation within hours and then collapsed more than 90 percent as insider wallets pulled liquidity, with analyses cited in press reports estimating losses around 250 million dollars across tens of thousands of wallets. Milei deleted the post the same night and said he had not been "interiorized" in the project's details, describing his tweet as spreading the word rather than promoting an investment.

## Investigations

Everything that follows is allegation and investigation rather than adjudicated fact. Argentine prosecutors opened a criminal probe into Milei for possible fraud and influence peddling; opposition lawmakers pursued impeachment motions that failed; and a lower house investigative commission concluded in a report covered by the Buenos Aires Times and Buenos Aires Herald that Milei used his presidential role to spread an alleged scam, assigning political responsibility to him and his sister, chief of staff Karina Milei, findings the government rejected. The Block reported the commission found Milei provided "essential collaboration" to the project. In November 2025 an Argentine federal judge froze the assets of Davis and two associates, and March 2026 reporting by MercoPress described a court probe finding an alleged draft agreement for a 5 million dollar payment tied to Milei's promotion, along with call records showing seven calls between Milei and intermediary Mauricio Novelli on the night of the post. In April 2026 the Chamber of Deputies revived its inquiry and began summoning ministers. A US class action proceeds in New York, where a judge in August 2025 dissolved a freeze on some 58 million dollars of Davis's funds pending litigation, per Protos. Milei has denied all wrongdoing throughout and remains uncharged as of mid 2026.

## Significance

LIBRA converted the [[celebrity coin wave]] playbook into a constitutional problem: the same launch structure as any celebrity rug, but with a president's account as the distribution channel.
