FUD is an acronym for fear, uncertainty, and doubt. In crypto it names negative information or sentiment spread about an asset or the market, whether accurate, exaggerated, or invented. The word functions as a noun ("ignore the FUD"), a verb ("they're fudding the coin"), and produces the agent noun "fudder." Its emotional opposite in trenches vocabulary is hopium, and its behavioral counterpart is FOMO, the fear of missing out that drives buying rather than selling. ## Usage In meme coin communities, FUD is the standard label for anything that might make holders sell: rumors that the [[dev]] is dumping, claims of a [[bundle]], screenshots of insider wallets, or simply a falling chart. The term is double edged. Deliberately spreading FUD is a recognized manipulation tactic, used to shake out holders and buy cheaper, and coordinated "FUD campaigns" are part of [[pvp]] competition between rival coins. At the same time, communities use the word defensively to dismiss legitimate criticism, and a common trenches proverb holds that "the FUD was real" when a warning later proves true. Someone who ignores all warnings is said to have diamond handed through the FUD (see [[paper hands and diamond hands]]). ## History The acronym long predates crypto. It was popularized in the 1970s computer industry, where it described incumbent marketing tactics, associated in industry lore with IBM's competitive practices, designed to scare customers away from rivals' products. Bitcoin communities adopted the word in the early 2010s for negative press about cryptocurrency, and glossaries by Binance Academy and others codified its crypto sense. In the trenches era it has narrowed further, from industry level narratives to the minute by minute information war around individual meme coins. ## References - https://academy.binance.com/en/glossary/fear-uncertainty-and-doubt - https://markets.bitcoin.com/glossary/fud - https://www.sofi.com/learn/content/what-does-fud-mean/ - https://changelly.com/blog/what-does-fud-mean-in-crypto/
