Degen, short for degenerate, is crypto slang for a trader who takes extreme speculative risk, typically without research, and more broadly a self applied cultural identity built around that behavior. Unlike most trading insults, degen is worn proudly: calling oneself a degen converts recklessness into belonging. As an adjective it marks the risk level of an activity ("a degen play," "degen hours").
Usage
Degen is the default identity label of the trenches, where participants ape into coins minutes after launch with full knowledge that most go to zero. The term structures self deprecating humor ("I am not investing, I am degening") and product naming across the industry, from "degen mode" toggles in trading apps to tokens and chains named Degen. It pairs with an implicit code: degens accept losses without complaint, celebrate absurd wins, and treat the casino framing as honest in contrast to projects that pretend to fundamentals. The label distinguishes participants from outsiders and from more cautious traders, and appears in countless compound phrases such as "degen gambling," "degen szn," and "resident degen."
History
Degenerate has described compulsive gamblers for decades, and Ledger's glossary links the crypto sense to sports betting slang for bettors wagering beyond their knowledge. Know Your Meme records an Urban Dictionary definition of the shortened form as early as 2005 and notes popularization through the 2010s, including the Canadian sitcom Letterkenny. Crypto adopted the word during the DeFi summer of 2020, when unaudited yield farms made "degen farming" a recognized activity, and CoinGecko published a definition of "degen trader" in 2021. The Solana meme coin era completed its transformation from insult to identity, with major glossaries treating trencher and degen as synonyms.
