A cult coin is a meme coin whose defining asset is its holders. Where a [[cabal]] coin is run from behind the scenes by insiders who control supply and promotion, a cult coin is carried by a community that treats the token as an identity and holding it as a practice: members adopt shared imagery and mantras, produce a constant stream of content, raid replies on X, and stigmatize selling. In the [[trenches]], calling a chart a cult is praise. It means demand is sticky, supply is distributed, and the coin can survive drawdowns that would kill a purely momentum driven launch. ## Usage Traders use the word to describe holder culture rather than price action: "the cult is still here" after an 80 percent drawdown, or "needs a cult" as a diagnosis for a coin with volume but no retention. Many cult coins are community takeovers, where a [[cto]] community inherits an abandoned token precisely because a dead dev and a scattered supply make the "no insiders" claim credible. The label also carries an outside reading, in which cult is simply bagholding rebranded as faith, and skeptics use it in exactly that spirit. ## The 2026 wave In August 2026 the framing became explicit doctrine on crypto Twitter. The trader Dogen (@realdogen) posted "cults > cabals $wiwiwi", compressing the meta into three words: after years of [[insider]] dominated launches, the market was rotating toward coins whose pitch was the absence of a cabal. A widely shared list by @shahh sorted the trending board into implicit categories, tagging $CATE as a "cat cult" alongside established characters and mascots, and treating cult status as a distinct asset class within the meme market. Coins like [[wiwiwi]] and [[lmeow]] ran on this framing during the same weeks, as of mid August 2026 an ongoing rotation. ## Lineage The archetype predates the term's 2026 vogue. [[retardio]], launched in January 2024, made the community itself the product, with its Retardio Cousins NFT holders forming one of Solana's loudest subcultures. [[SPX6900]] became the definitive belief coin, its culture of mantras and refusal to sell theorized by [[murad mahmudov]], whose 2024 memecoin supercycle thesis argued that meme coins function as decentralized belief systems and that cult formation, not utility, is what compounds. Remilia Corporation's CULT token, released in December 2024, put the word on the ticker itself. The 2026 usage inherits all of this while sharpening the contrast with cabal coins into a slogan. ## References - https://x.com/realdogen - https://x.com/shahh - https://www.chaincatcher.com/en/article/2146581 - https://wiki.remilia.org/$CULT - https://tw.tradingview.com/chart/SPXSOL_9T1H1U.USD/yFUjud1u-Cult-Memes-in-2025-SPX6900-will-outperform-99-of-memecoins - https://crypto.news/what-are-the-trenches-solana-memecoin-culture-slang/
