Chill Guy (CHILLGUY) is a meme coin on the Solana blockchain based on "Just a Chill Guy," a cartoon of a relaxed anthropomorphic dog in a gray sweater created by artist Phillip Banks in 2023. Launched on pump.fun on November 15, 2024, it rode a TikTok trend to a nine figure valuation in days and triggered one of the era's defining fights over meme ownership.

Origin

Banks posted the character in October 2023, and through 2024 it became a global TikTok trend expressing unbothered calm ("just a chill guy"). During the post election meme mania, an anonymous deployer launched CHILLGUY on pump.fun without the artist's involvement or consent. The coin's pitch was simply that the most viral image on the internet at that moment deserved a ticker.

Market history

CHILLGUY surged more than 20,000 percent within five days of launch, with coverage recording a peak market capitalization in the 500 to 700 million dollar range in late November 2024 and a listing wave that included Binance futures. On November 21, 2024, Banks declared the character copyrighted and threatened legal action against commercial users, sending the token down more than 50 percent from about 500 million to 220 million dollars. Community members responded by donating over 200 SOL and CHILLGUY tokens worth roughly 300,000 dollars to a wallet for the artist. Banks pursued takedowns of infringing uses but the token itself continued trading, recovering into December 2024 before joining the broader 2025 meme decline; it now trades at a small fraction of its peak.

Cultural impact

CHILLGUY forced the intellectual property question into the trenches: what happens when a meme coin's underlying image has a living, objecting author? The episode was covered well beyond crypto media and became the reference case cited in later disputes between artists and token communities.
