BONK is a meme coin on the [[Solana]] blockchain featuring a Shiba Inu mascot. Launched on December 25, 2022, in the aftermath of the FTX collapse, it is widely treated as the founding coin of the modern Solana meme coin era and a fixture of [[the trenches]]. ## Origin BONK appeared as a Christmas Day airdrop at a moment when Solana's reputation and price were at historic lows following the November 2022 failure of FTX and Alameda Research. The anonymous team distributed roughly half of the total supply to the Solana community, targeting NFT holders, artists, and developers, in one of the largest airdrops the chain had seen. The stated goal was to create a community coin that pushed back against predatory tokenomics and gave Solana users a reason to stay. Trading began around December 30, 2022. ## Market history BONK opened at a price of roughly 0.0000001487 dollars and surged more than 2,000 percent in its first week, briefly touching about 0.0000034 dollars by January 5, 2023. The rally faded through 2023, with the token bottoming near 0.00000017 dollars in October 2023 before riding Solana's late 2023 recovery to new highs. Its all time high came on November 20, 2024, at about 0.000059 dollars. During that run the market capitalization climbed from roughly 2.3 billion dollars to more than 4 billion dollars within a week, helped by a large token burn cheered by the community. In 2025 the BONK community launched letsbonk.fun (also called bonk.fun), a token launchpad that competed directly with [[pump.fun]]. In July 2025 the platform briefly flipped pump.fun as the leading Solana launchpad, at times claiming over 55 percent of launchpad volume and about 65 percent of daily token launches, with fees routed into BONK buybacks. Pump.fun retook the lead by August 2025. By August 2026 aggregator data placed BONK's market capitalization in the low hundreds of millions of dollars, far below its 2024 peak but still among the larger Solana meme coins. ## Cultural impact BONK is credited in trench lore as "the coin that saved Solana," arriving when the chain was widely declared dead and giving its community a rallying point. It established the template that later Solana meme coins followed: a fair, community wide distribution, an animal mascot, and an explicitly anti VC posture. Nearly every major Solana meme cycle since, from [[dogwifhat]] to the pump.fun era, traces its lineage to the BONK airdrop. The coin also proved unusually durable, evolving from a pure meme into an ecosystem brand with its own launchpad, trading tools, and burn program, an arc few meme coins have matched. ## References - https://www.coingecko.com/en/coins/bonk - https://atomicwallet.io/academy/articles/what-is-bonk - https://www.fxstreet.com/amp/cryptocurrencies/news/bonk-holds-near-record-high-as-traders-cheer-hefty-token-burn-202411180905 - https://changehero.io/blog/what-is-bonk-crypto-beginners-guide-to-the-2024-meme-coin-sensation/ - https://decrypt.co/328822/bonk-meme-coin-launchpad-flips-pump-fun-for-solana-tokens-created - https://finance.yahoo.com/news/bonk-fun-grabs-55-solana-072753112.html - https://changelly.com/blog/best-meme-coins-to-buy-now/
