Austin Federa is the former head of strategy at the Solana Foundation and a co founder of DoubleZero, the dedicated fiber network built to make blockchains faster.
Austin Federa is an American infrastructure entrepreneur, the former head of strategy at the Solana Foundation and a co founder of DoubleZero, a project building dedicated physical network infrastructure for high performance blockchains. For roughly four years he was one of Solana's most recognizable public voices, the person explaining the network's outages, upgrades and meme coin boom to the outside world.
Media and marketing years
Federa's background is in media and communications: digital content director at an NPR member station, social media editor at The Boston Globe in 2015, marketing director at Republic in 2018, and product marketing at the staking startup Bison Trails, which Coinbase acquired. He joined Solana Labs in 2021 as head of communications and moved to the Solana Foundation as head of strategy in late 2022, arriving just as FTX's collapse cratered the ecosystem. Through the recovery, the pump fun era and the congestion crises that meme coin volume inflicted on the chain, Federa was the ecosystem's designated explainer, a constant presence on podcasts and panels while the trenches pushed the network to its limits.
DoubleZero
In December 2024 Federa announced his departure to co found DoubleZero with Mateo Ward and Andrew McConnell, veterans of the network engineering firm Malbec Labs. Blockworks called it "the most interesting experiment in crypto": rather than another L1 or L2, DoubleZero assembles dedicated fiber links contributed by independent operators into a purpose built physical network that increases bandwidth and cuts latency for validators, targeting, in Federa's words, an architecture capable of supporting tens of millions of transactions per second. The pitch is directly relevant to trench trading, where snipers, bots and market makers fight over milliseconds. The project reached a reported $400 million valuation by March 2025 and brought its network and a native token to market in the second half of 2025, with Solana validators among its earliest users.
Significance
Federa's career tracks the professionalization of Solana's meme coin era. As foundation strategist he defended a chain whose flagship use case was degenerate speculation; as a founder he now sells the speed that speculation demands. He remains one of the most quoted commentators on Solana's direction, validator economics and the physical limits of putting markets on chain.
